Smoking Cessation Program
Every smoker learned how to smoke. In order to become a nonsmoker, you must unlearn or
modify your behavior. Our 4-week smoking cessation program is “self -help” based. This means you are following a step-by-step plan on your own with our support. Our program is comprehensive focusing on education and behavioral modification.
The program is based on the American Cancer Society’s “Fresh Start Program”
Participants meet one evening per week averaging 1.5 – 2 hours in length for 4 weeks.
Facilitated by registered respiratory therapists and supervised by a pulmonologist.
Health Progress Testing
During to the 4 sessions, various screening tests will be performed to assist you in
monitoring your progress. The tests include:
- Pulmonary Function Test
- Carbon Monoxide Test
- Oxygen Saturation
Building Your Support Network
As a participant of the MANA Smoking Cessation Program, you will have a support
network consisting of a partner in your group, the therapist/facilitator, and your family
physician. This support network is available during the 4 sessions, as well as after you
complete the program. We strongly recommend participants extend this support to include
family, friends, and co-workers.
Program tailored to the individual: The program is designed to meet the individual needs of the participant.
Cessation Aids
There are a variety of products available on the market today designed to help people quit
smoking in a gradual, more comfortable way. Choosing one that is right for you is a matter
of preference. Your packet will include a product information sheet that will assist you in
making that choice.
What to Expect
The first evening consists of getting to know participants and staff. Each participant is
congratulated for making the decision to be smoke free. The objective of Session 1 focuses
on why you smoke and how nicotine works.
Becoming smoke free is not easy. The latest statistics tell us smokers who choose to quit
“cold turkey” have less than a 5% chance for success. More structured, support-based
programs have a 25% success rate. The very best smoking cessation aid is your own will and
determination to quit smoking. Through our program, you will be given the tools and
support needed for success.
Enrollment
The cost of the program is $100.00 and includes 4 sessions and the health progress tests.
Nicotine replacement products are not included and are the responsibility of the participant.
Discount coupons are available for some products. Check with your insurance company to
see if you can be partially or fully reimbursed for your cessation aids.
