Up to 55% of American women may be affected by varicose veins and 15% of American men. Varicose veins are broken veins, where the valve and muscles do not work to push the blood back the heart. The pressure in the veins builds up and the veins become enlarged, eventually bulging to the skin's surface. Pain in the legs is typically related to varicose veins. Vein disorders are not always visible since most veins lie deep beneath the skins surface. Varicose veins do not heal themselves and if left untreated can develope blood clots, bleeding rashes and ulceration.
Risk factors for varicose veins include:

- Pregnancy, especially multiple pregnancies
- Standing profession
- Obesity
