7 Family Activities to Promote Good Heart Health

Heart health is something that most people don’t start thinking about until they are older, but it’s not something that only older people should think about. Keeping your heart healthy is important for everyone, at every age. Here are seven activities that promote good heart health that you can do with the entire family.

Walking

Regular physical activity is vital in maintaining good heart health. Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, and children need a minimum of 60 minutes of activity every day. Walking is a great way for the whole family to stay active and promote good heart health.

It’s easy to get out and enjoy a stroll – there’s no planning or preparation needed. Go to the park, or walk around your neighborhood.  Go for walks after dinner, or take your dog along to get some exercise.

As long as you’re active for 10 minutes you can count that time towards to your recommended daily total for activity.

Hiking

Hiking is another great heart healthy activity for families to do together, and there are lots of great hiking trails in Northwest Arkansas.

Like walking, hiking is an activity that people of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy together. It provides good exercise, and it’s great for enjoying fresh air in a natural setting.

Biking

The Razorback Regional Greenway offers 36 miles of protected multi-use trail, which makes it great for biking with little ones. Make sure everyone wears a helmet, all bikes are in good working condition, and everyone practices bike safety.

Grocery shopping

Physical activity is a big part of heart health, but it’s not the only factor. The foods you eat also contribute to keeping your heart healthy. Grocery shopping with the family is a wonderful heart healthy activity.

Spend time together as a family, pick healthy foods, and teach children how to choose healthy foods by checking nutrition labels. Children will enjoy being included in the decision making, and it’s a great teaching opportunity.

Cooking

As with grocery shopping, cooking with the family allows you to teach your children the importance of healthy eating and good nutrition. Let the kids choose a healthy meal each week and help them prepare it!

Family time

Managing stress is another important factor for heart health. Be sure to set aside time to just relax, unwind, and spend time together as a family. Watch a movie, play board games, or just take it easy.

Visit the doctor

You might not consider going to the doctor as a fun family activity, but it’s key in maintaining good heart health and good overall health. Find a doctor that specializes in family medicine, or find a pediatrician for your child, and schedule your wellness visits today!
